Best College Skincare Routine Tips

There is no busier time in your life than as a college student. Due to the stress, long week days, and all-nighters, a skincare routine is usually the last thing on your mind. Here’s a quick, no-fuss way to maintain an effective routine for healthier skin.

1.Know your skin type

The first step to beginning any skincare routine is knowing what type of skin you have. Is your skin always dry and needing moisture? Or is it easily irritated? Is it shiny or just a little oily?

There are four basic skin types:

  • Oily: Your skin tends to be shiny with excess oil and tends to be acne-prone

  • Combination: Your cheeks tend to be dry or normal, but the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin) is oily

  • Dry: Your skin typically feels tight and cracks easily

  • Sensitive: You have thin skin that’s prone to irritation and allergic reactions

2.Find double-duty products

Saving time, space and money is always helpful as a college student. One way we can do that with a skincare routine is choosing products that are designed for multiple uses. Remember to cleanse your skin every morning and night. Pick a cleanser that removes dirt, oil and grime AND exfoliates the skin. Your skin will stay healthy and radiant. Choose an acne-fighting cleanser if your skin is acne-prone.

Every skin type and complexion needs a solid moisturizer. Pick a double-duty product that provides your skin with hydration, color, and sun protection all in one. You’ll only have to apply one product instead of three! Just remembering this simple tip will save you money, time and space on your counter.

3.Practice good hygiene

Campus life includes lots of germs. With public showers, toilets, cafeterias, computer rooms and classrooms, germs and bacteria are spreading constantly. It’s important to protect your skin from the bad bacteria that can cause acne.

  • Whether it’s before or after eating at the dining hall, walking around campus (think of the many door knobs you touch) or browsing through books at the library, you should always wash your hands. Also, Don’t rely on hand sanitizers to kill germs. They’re helpful when you can’t wash your hands, but cleaning your hands with soap and water is still the best way to eliminate germs.

  • Wear flip-flops when showering in the dorm or at the gym.

  • Don’t share makeup or skincare products.

  • Keep your bath products inside a shower caddy.

4.Don’t tan

May young adults are unaware of the effects that are caused by tanning. Tanning can damage your skin permanently and even cause you to look years older. You skin will thank you years down the road if you help protect it now! Shield skin from the sun by keeping a bottle of sunscreen in your bag and apply it daily. Remember to reapply the sunscreen every two hours. It’s also a good idea to always wear sunglasses and invest in a hat for extra protection. Many think that indoor tanning is a safer option, but it’s just as dangerous, if not more! Today, there are plenty of products that provide skin with a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow, without damaging your skin.

5.Fit in skincare when staying up

It’s so easy to forget about your skin with late nights at the library and early morning exams, but remember that you don’t need a ton of time to maintain a well-rested, healthy complexion! If you can only do one thing before bed, make sure to always wash your face to fully remove makeup and dirt! This keeps pores from clogging and leading to acne. Apply a mask to deep-cleanse your face as you study or use a moisturizing eye cream to combat puffiness and dark circles after a long night.
